The Imperial House of Japan Agency decided not to organize the traditional New Year's greeting of Emperor Naruhito. The agency, which is responsible for managing circumstances related to the Japanese Imperial Family, took this decision to avoid the crowds that usually occur during the event.

About 68,000 people attended this event in 2019 at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan. The last time this event was cancelled was in 1990 when Japan grieved the passing of Emperor Hirohito, Naruhito's grandfather.
